What is The Shelfless Reader?

I read over 100 books a year. I don’t own a single bookshelf, and I’ve never felt like I was missing anything. But I have feelings about every one of those books, and this is where I write about them.

The Shelfless Reader is where I talk about books the way I actually talk about them. Not star ratings and plot summaries, but the scene that made me cry in a parking lot, the rabbit hole I fell into at midnight, and the character I’m still not over three weeks later.

What you’ll get for free:

Things I Googled While Reading is my signature series. Every book sends me down at least one research rabbit hole, and I share what I found, why it fascinated me, and how it made the book hit different. One story turns into ten tabs open.

Who I Became While Reading is about the books that don’t change your life so much as change you for a little while. I write about the version of me that exists inside a really good book, and the weird, wonderful things that happen when a story takes over your brain.

Emotional essays are the deeper pieces, where books connect to real life. Stored trauma you didn’t know you had, history you never learned in school, how we change without noticing, motherhood, and why fiction sometimes hits harder than reality.

The Monthly Roundup is everything I read that month, with my honest take on each one, how I read it, and a look at the pieces every book is about to turn into. It’s basically the table of contents for my reading life.

All of that is free, and it always will be.

What you get when you go paid

Reading Trees are the heart of the paid tier, and they’re the thing I’m proudest of. A tree is the chain of how one book pulled me into the next, and the next, and what each one did to me along the way. You get a brand new one every month, plus the full vault of trees I’ve built.

Paid subscribers also get the behind-the-scenes of my slow hunt for the shelf and the reading nook to finally put it in, and a weekly chat thread where we talk about what we’re all reading right now. It’s the quieter room, just us and the books.

Five dollars a month, or fifty for the year, which is two months on me.

Founding members

If you really want in, founding members get everything above, plus a quarterly book club where we read a themed stack together, built around that season’s Reading Tree. And once a year, I build you your own personalized reading tree, made for your taste or quest for new knowledge.

What this isn’t:

This isn't literary criticism. I'm not analyzing prose style or narrative structure, and I'm not here to tear books apart. If I didn't love it, I probably didn't finish it, and I definitely don't write about it. I don't care how you read, whether it's Kindle, audiobook, library book, a paperback from a garage sale, or a brand spanking new collector's edition. If you feel it, you're my people.

Who am I?

I’m Charlie Grimm. I’m almost 50 (like what!?). I read on my Kindle and listen to audiobooks while I drive, cook, walk, clean, sew, paint, and pretend to be productive. I use the library like it’s my job. I love historical fiction, fantasy, speculative and dystopian fiction, a little crime or mystery, and even some autobiographies, plus anything narrated by Julia Whelan. I’m sarcastic, emotional, and when a book wrecks me, I can’t keep it to myself, so I’ll corner you at 5am at the gym or call my daughter mid-afternoon to rant about the thing I just finished.
